Machado de Assis

Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (21 June 1839 – 29 September 1908) , often known by his surnames as Machado de Assis, was a pioneer Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer, widely regarded as the greatest writer of Brazilian literature. Machado's works had a great influence on Brazilian literary schools of the late 19th century and 20th century. José Saramago, Carlos Fuentes, Susan Sontag and Harold Bloom are among his admirers and Bloom calls him "the supreme black literary artist to date." The most prestigious literary award in Brazil was named in his honor.
